00:02:23: I look at a number like that and immediately wonder what the catch is.
00:02:27: To get a heavy-duty truck to go seven hundred kilometers, you have pack it with so many lithium ion cells.

00:02:42: Well, that is the exact tension engineers have been fighting but physical packaging and energy density has improved dramatically.

00:02:50: you've got the new M&E TGX and Scania's new dynamic series.

00:03:32: Meanwhile Mercedes-Benz is preparing their E-Actro.

00:03:45: absolutely But okay, looking at these seven hundred and twenty-kilometer ranges for battery electric trucks it naturally makes me question the other side of the aisle.

00:03:55: if BIs are performing this well why is anyone still pouring billions of euros into hydrogen?

00:04:01: It honestly feels like a lost cause at this point, am I missing something fundamental here?
00:04:05: You are actually and it is really common blind spot.
00:04:08: A lot of analysts fall into the trap looking for single silver bullet technology.
00:04:12: Jocko Ryderkirk pointed us out brilliantly in his analysis from The Share.
00:04:17: The logistics industry operates an incredibly diverse realities So they're actively choosing multi-technology approach because physics essentially demands that.
00:04:27: Okay break them down.
00:04:29: why does physics demand hydrogen if I can already drive a battery truck.
00:04:33: Seven hundred kilometers?
00:04:34: because seven hundred kilometers is fantastic for predictable regional routes.
00:04:39: You know where the truck returns to base every night sure, but what about a truck hauling maximum payload across?
00:04:45: The Alps in freezing temperatures all right running twenty four hours A day with dual drivers batteries lose efficiency and extreme cold And you just cannot afford park that truck for hours To charge it.

00:04:59: so a massive coalition was announced at this show Daimler Volvo, Toyota, Bosch.

00:05:09: And they've officially committed to scaling hydrogen trucks specifically for those heavy-duty maximum uptime use cases.
00:05:16: But wait haven't we been hearing about hydrogen trucks?

00:05:20: The problem has never really been the truck itself right.
00:05:23: it's the fact that there was nowhere to refuel them.
00:05:26: You can't just build a forty-ton fuel cell truck and hope a gas station magically appears on the highway.
00:05:31: Which is exactly why this coalition is so important, they aren't just building trucks They are building the entire upstream ecosystem simultaneously.

00:05:39: Erwin Pentfornis from Air Liquid actually detailed how their massively scaling up stream hydrogen production Their moving form a twenty megawatt operational electrolyzer to a two hundred megawat plant This year.

00:06:46: yes the vehicles both the sprinters And the marathon runners there finally ready But they can't actually do their jobs if there's no water on the course.

00:08:22: the standardized tech works across different brands sure but to make this viable across Europe The industry needs thirty five thousand public MCS points by twenty thirty.

00:09:17: Think of it like this If you can't get massive high pressure water pipe from the city to fill your pool You use standard low-pressure garden hose.

00:09:27: You leave that house running day and night To slowly feel a mass of water tower.
00:09:31: Then when truck pulls up Open floodgates and dump the entire tower onto the truck at once.
00:09:37: That is a perfect visualization!
00:09:39: The technical term for your watertower, battery buffered storage?

00:09:43: Kanjewik actually highlighted this as one of the most critical immediate solutions.

00:11:24: There were dozens of Chinese brands occupying massive real estate Santa Nei Deepway Super Panther.
00:11:30: Yeah, and Ofutan was there not just to show off they.
00:11:33: we're celebrating their thirteen millionth global delivery.
00:11:36: The
00:11:36: thirteen billion?
00:11:37: And
00:11:37: yeah!
00:11:38: They literally launching an in Europe for Europe strategy...they are planting the flag
00:11:44: And they have the structural economics to back up that ambition, don't they?
00:11:48: They do.
00:11:48: Thomas Bang from McKinsey shared data That should seriously keep European incumbents awake at night.

00:11:56: Chinese OEMs currently haven estimated twenty-five percent To forty percent Structural cost advantage over European manufacturers And their development cycles are ruthless!
00:12:06: They can develop and launch a new truck in like Twenty two to twenty eight months.

00:12:14: half the development time and roughly a third cheaper, that is a bloodbath waiting to happen.

00:12:20: But you know are the trucks actually suited for European roads or they just cheap imports?

00:12:26: Jason Reich did a brilliant direct comparison on LinkedIn between the new BYD ETT-IV in the Tesla Semi.

00:12:34: The contrast in strategy is striking.
00:12:37: Tell me about
00:12:37: BYD designed their flagship specifically for the European market constraints.
00:12:42: They use a four by two axle layout to respect Europe's strict forty-four ton limit and they LFP, lithium-iron phosphate batteries which are heavier but you know incredibly durable far less prone to thermal runaway and drastically cheaper.
00:12:56: And most importantly BYD built in both MCS and standard CCS II charging ports?
00:13:02: Exactly whereas Tesla brought a very US centric design to Germany.
00:13:06: Yeah
00:13:07: the Tesla Semi uses a six by four layout
00:13:09: right Which just adds unnecessary weight penalties and tire wear under European regulations.
00:13:14: And
00:13:14: they're only offering standard CCS charging via a clunky adapter because
00:13:24: Tailoring the hardware to the local fleet operators exact reality while Tesla is trying to force a square peg into around hole

00:13:32: But you know I hear all of this.
00:13:33: The forty percent cost advantage that tailored specs LFP batteries, but i have To push back hard here.

00:13:52: If a Chinese-made electric truck throws high voltage error code, what happens?
00:14:01: Oh man...

00:14:02: There is no workshop within one hundred miles that has the diagnostic software or train mechanics to fix it.
00:14:09: You just hit on the exact defensive moat of European incumbents.
00:14:14: Selling the hardware is just the intro ticket.
00:14:16: It's the execution of the aftermarket service network that actually keeps a logistics company solvent.
00:14:21: Exactly, and this brings us to the real battlefield The life cycle profit

00:14:32: What does it actually mean for you as the person buying these trucks?
00:14:35: Well, it means the truck is no longer the product.

00:14:38: Okay Dr Max Grossman also from McKinsey pointed out that by twenty thirty five roughly ninety percent of Europe's seventeen point five billion truck profit pool isn't going to come from the initial sale of the vehicle.

00:14:52: Ninety-percent will come from recurring life cycle services.
00:14:54: That means after sales parts predictive maintenance software subscriptions financing insurance charging routing telemetry data all

00:15:10: They might sell you the razor at cost but they're gonna make an absolute fortune selling you the blades over the next ten years.
00:15:17: Precisely European OEMs have incredibly dense established multi-generational service networks across the continent.
00:15:24: Right A fleet operator knows that if a Scania or Volvo breaks down anywhere in Europe there is mechanic who can fix it.
00:15:32: And Chinese OEMs just do not have that density yet.
00:15:34: No, they don't!
00:15:35: That is why the initial purchase price isn't whole story.
00:15:38: So if maximizing uptime and squeezing every last cent out of that TCO over-the-vehicle's life cycle was where the money is then The logical conclusion Is to eliminate the most expensive Unpredictable variable in the entire logistics chain.

00:15:54: Exactly taking a human element out of equation entirely both behind the wheel and under-the-hood.

00:16:58: McKinsey estimates that autonomous trucking could be a one hundred billion value pool in Europe by twenty thirty five.

00:18:20: quiet ai learns what normal looks Like for that specific truck on that specific route And it flags of failing component long before a human driver would ever see a warning light On The dashboard.

00:20:09: But Dr Michael Putz pointed out a massive glaring blind spot on the show floor.

00:21:15: So while everyone is fixated on the futuristic one hundred billion euro autonomous trucking pools massive megawatt infrastructure the actual day-to-day logistics of getting a package to your front door is quietly marching toward a cliff.

00:21:28: The next great logistics crisis might not happen on a long haul highway, it might happened right in your neighborhood because the economics of the humble diesel delivery van are about to completely break.
